In the U.S. alone, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessdasher.com\/social-media-for-business-statistics\/\">77% of small businesses<\/a> use social media for essential functions like sales, marketing, and customer service.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no wonder, as these same online platforms are the hunting grounds for buyers: <a href=\"https:\/\/offers.hubspot.com\/social-media-trends-report%23:~:text%3D52%2525,searchable%2520and%2520easiest%2520to%2520buy.\">One in four consumers<\/a> prefer searching for brands on social media platforms over search engines. And when it comes to how consumers value individual creators, <a href=\"https:\/\/investors.sproutsocial.com\/news\/news-details\/2024\/New-Research-Reveals-Influencers-Significantly-Drive-Purchasing-Decisions\/default.aspx\">49% make daily, weekly, or monthly purchases<\/a> based on influencer posts.<\/p>\n<p>I think it\u2019s safe to say social media is a lucrative channel for entrepreneurs. It\u2019s also a low-cost, high-reward business tool for people with creative minds but tight budgets.<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a> <\/p>\n<h2>Top Social Media Entrepreneurship Trends<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Short-form video is dominating.<\/h3>\n<p>Across the board, social media platforms are really pushing and prioritizing video right now. Short-form video is <a href=\"https:\/\/digiday.com\/media\/linkedins-video-push-appears-to-be-working-in-2025\/\">the fastest-growing content category<\/a> on LinkedIn, and the platform recently started testing a vertical video feed (similar to the formats on Instagram and TikTok).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been seeing an explosion of video podcast interviews,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/gigirobinson\/\">Gigi Robinson<\/a>, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/hostsofinfluence.com\/\">Hosts of Influence<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s allowed for opportunities where you can better relate to a brand, or a founder of a brand, which may make you a more loyal customer.<\/p>\n\n<h3>2. They&#8217;re getting their employees involved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h3>3. There\u2019s a rise in influencer marketing.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re moving towards more authenticity over aesthetics,\u201d Sneddon also shared with me. \u201cSocial media entrepreneurs are starting to focus on raw, relatable, more personality-related content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As brands catch on, many are <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/marketing\/micro-influencer-marketing\">turning to micro-influencers<\/a> (creators with 10,000 to 99,999 followers) rather than celebrities to showcase their products and services through original content.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/marketing\/hubspot-blog-social-media-marketing-report\">Sixty-four percent<\/a> of marketers have worked with micro-influencers in the last year, and 47% say this group generated the most marketing success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack in the day, people felt like you had to have a million followers to get partnerships, to land brand deals, to get opportunities,\u201d says West. \u201cThat\u2019s not the case anymore. If you have a strong niche and a well-engaged community, even if you have 5k followers, you&#8217;re still able to gain access.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p><a><\/a> <\/p>\n<h2>Tips for Social Media Entrepreneurs<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Don\u2019t be afraid to carve out a niche.<\/h3>\n<p>In a saturated industry, presenting something fresh by leaning into your unique experience, expertise, and interests is what will set you apart. That\u2019s what West did, and she tells me it\u2019s working in her favor.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, my newsletter, podcast, and community platform <a href=\"https:\/\/briannegarrett.substack.com\/\">Stella<\/a> is a network specifically connecting Black women in media. That\u2019s by design \u2014 and it works: Niche communities can foster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.social.plus\/blog\/why-niche-communities-are-the-future-and-how-you-can-create-one\">greater user engagement and loyalty<\/a>. They also promote a stronger sense of belonging and relatability.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Be adaptable.<\/h3>\n<p>Part of mastering social media is experimenting across platforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think platform diversification is key,\u201d says Robinson. Don\u2019t be afraid to add and evolve \u2014 oftentimes, what\u2019s waiting are massive rewards and new customers. Don\u2019t be afraid to pivot, either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For example, Substack launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/read.substack.com\/p\/introducing-the-substack-creator?utm_source%3Dsubstack%26utm_medium%3Demail\">Creator Accelerator Fund<\/a>, which incentivized creators to migrate their subscriber communities to its platform, offering a host of tools and services.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Be consistent but intentional.<\/h3>\n<p>Develop a social media posting schedule that best suits your business model \u2014 and stick to it. But don\u2019t get bogged down by the notion that you need to post at a certain cadence just because you\u2019re seeing it from another person or brand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsistency for everyone looks different,\u201d Sneddon tells me. \u201cI always say quality over quantity. You want your posts to be value-driven and to actually add something to your audience. You don&#8217;t want to be posting every day just to try and keep consistent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the frequency, social media maintenance can get tedious. Schedulers like <a href=\"https:\/\/vistasocial.com\/\">Vista Social<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/buffer.com\/\">Buffer<\/a> are helpful alternatives to manual posting, and I know a lot of companies and creators who have had great results with them.<\/p>\n<p>Also, most social media platforms have built-in scheduling tools you can tap into.<\/p>\n<p>And if you\u2019re ever feeling burned out creatively, West has a tip: She says that AI, when used responsibly, can be a great resource to help generate new content ideas.<\/p>\n<p>For example, HubSpot has an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hubspot.com\/blog-topic-generator\">AI-powered blog idea generator tool<\/a> that can help you brainstorm ideas when you\u2019re stuck or hone an idea into something you can work with.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hubspot.com\/blog-topic-generator?hubs_post-cta=image\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hubspot.com\/blog-topic-generator\"><em>Source<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>4. Collect your own data.<\/h3>\n<p>If there\u2019s anything we learned from <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/marketing\/tiktok-ban\">TikTok\u2019s temporary U.S. ban<\/a>, it\u2019s that we can\u2019t assume platforms \u2014 and the data that comes with it \u2014 will exist forever.<\/p>\n<p>Create your own email marketing system to ensure you\u2019re collecting emails and other pertinent information from your online community.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Build a community.<\/h3>\n<p>Successful social media entrepreneurs, says Robinson, know the difference between an audience and a community. The biggest differentiator lies in engagement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour audience is the people that are often supporting you, but your communities are the people that buy into you. When you are able to be successful with social media, you\u2018re able to convert, and you\u2019re able to make money because people want access to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, community is central to conversions.<\/p>\n<p>Sneddon agrees. She says you should be constantly \u201cengaging with your audience, asking them questions, and replying to comments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She adds, \u201cThis will build your community and have people coming back to your page because they know you&#8217;re going to interact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a><\/a> <\/p>\n<h2>Don\u2019t be afraid to self-promote.<\/h2>\n<p>If I could share one main takeaway from these conversations \u2014 and my own experiences \u2014 it would be that you have to drive your business forward yourself. This is why one of the best strategies for sustaining a career as a social media entrepreneur is self-promotion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClosed mouths don\u2019t get fed,\u201d says Robinson. She\u2019s locked in 15 gigs since the start of 2025 by sharing her past work loudly across her social media channels.
